GDS’ Community Outreach Program is a grassroots movement to engage and empower our neighborhoods of Washington Heights/Inwood. Our campaign creates safe forums for police, public officials and community members. In addition our movement advocates for utilization of current resources in our community, fostering partnerships with city and local agencies, human services organizations and community members.

Our Advocacy component works with other program partner with Washington Heights & Inwood Youth Service Providers Collective (WHIYSPC)  to ensure that supportive therapeutic, educational, and recreational services are available in our community of Washington Heights/Inwood. One of the goals of our campaign is to increase awareness about the dire need for after-school counseling, educational, and recreational services in Washington Heights.

GDS Community Volunteers help reach out to community members, leaders, public officials and human services agencies to help ensure the utilization of resources that currently exist. They also develop new resources to bring about “social change” to Upper Manhattan (Washington Heights/Inwood).

For 18 years, GDS’ Youth and Family Services Programs have proven to be successful, working in some of the most challenged neighborhoods in NYC (South Bronx and Washington Heights). GDS Community Outreach Program advocates for those who need assistance with mental health, wellness, computer literacy, job-readiness, youth worker training and after-school programs.

Due to our transformational programs, the Washington Heights & Inwood Youth Service Providers Collective (WHIYSPC) presented GDS with The Counseling Award for most needed services in our Community (Manhattan Community Board 12).

GDS and its’community partners believe in the importance of utilizing resources in our community and the Fort Washington Armory. We  educate community members about free resources like the SUNY Attain lab and help create new supportive services.  Our current campaign is trying to implement community and police relations at NYC’s Armory on 168th Street. Weekly presentations and dicussion will be given on how to improve peace in our neighborhoods.

Another goal of GDS’s Community Outreach Program is to bring The David Lynch Foundation‘s Quiet Time, a technique also known as Transcendental Meditation, to the children, adults, and families in Upper Manhattan.

The needs of individuals and families in our communities are increasing while adequate resources are decreasing!
