In the 8 months that I have been a Mental Health Counseling Intern for GDS, I saw first-hand the transformative and beneficial program that GDS is for the community.  Seeing the kids growing in their confidence and positive behaviors showed me the real impact that the RYP program has in helping kids overcome the challenges they face.  Our director, Dr. Gary Altheim, was always determined to be there for the children by pushing through every obstacle to keep the GDS program alive for the community.  Throughout my time in the program, the kids bonded with Dr. Gary and the GDS team and I witnessed a caring environment be created where the kids felt comfortable opening up about their challenges, and were motivated to grow from them.  As I worked with parent clients (in addition to their children), I myself did not initially realize the depth of support we were giving until my last client-counselor meeting when a parent in the program said to me, “I wish I could say something to make you stay.  You’ve helped us so much.”  In this moment, it really hit me how important the work at GDS is, and how much the community benefits from the therapeutic support GDS provides.  I loved my time working with GDS and I grew so much as a youth worker under the training of Dr. Gary.  May GDS be blessed with many more years of helping youth and families to reach their potential!
